LATE held its third January Seminar on the 3rd of January 2020 at Riga Secondary School No. 34. Eighty teachers attended the event to see speakers talk on a variety of topics.

Inga Benina (Baltic Council) talked about Globally accepted exams and teaching qualifications in Latvia 2020.

Tatjana Kunda (VISC) talked about Teaching Writing: Practical Considerations.

During the session we will have a look at some activities which can help make teaching writing a valuable and enjoyable educational experience. How do we engage our students in the creative process and help them become aware of what strategies they should use as they create their work?

Robert Buckmaster (LATE Vice President and ELT Consultant) talked about The Map is Not the Territory

Maps are a fascinating informational resource, and are key documents in lots of fields (e.g. geography, history, urban planning, defence, ethnography, economics, law and order, transportation, and so on). In this session we will look at how we can use maps and plans to improve our students’ fluency and grammatical knowledge, as well as practice and develop 21st century skills.

Thomas Springer (Ventspils University) talked about Challenges Encountered by Latvian Learners of English as a Second Language.

Learners face many challenges when studying a language in groups. We will identify four main challenges and discuss how to overcome them. 1. Students Don’t Take Their Study Seriously. Why? 2. Over-Use of Native Language in the Classroom. 3. Students Become Teacher. 4. Strong Students Dominate the Class.
